Borderlands 4 Hotfix Update: Double XP from Bosses and Quadrupled XP from Elites - What You Need to Know?
In the latest hotfix patch for Borderlands 4, the developers significantly adjusted the experience gain mechanism, doubling the experience rewards from boss battles and quadrupling the experience gained from elite enemies.
This change drastically alters the leveling efficiency landscape in the game, especially for players aiming for the level 60 cap. Choosing the right experience farming method has become more crucial than ever.
Whether you're a newbie just reaching level 30 or a seasoned player already in Endgame, understanding the efficiency differences between various experience farming methods can significantly save time.
Based on systematic testing of various methods, including spam farming, boss battles, Drill Sites, Ordonite Processors, and Vile Bounties, the following will analyze in detail the most worthwhile experience farming strategies in the current version.
Older Methods
The following will analyze the limitations and shortcomings of the established experience farming areas Splashzone and Ordonite Processors.
Splashzone
Of all the experience farming methods tested, Splashzone ranked last in efficiency. While this update slightly increased the experience gained in Splashzone, it's still not a full-fledged boss unit, resulting in a significant reduction in experience gained.
Approximately 12 Splashzone skills are needed to equal the experience gained from one Vile Bounty. Calculated per hour, the experience gained from Splashzone is about 1.1 million, a vast difference compared to other methods.
The core reason for this is that Splashzone is categorized as a special unit rather than a standard boss, and its experience multiplier is independent of the patch's bonuses to bosses and elite monsters.
Even with extremely high kill efficiency, players cannot compensate for the inherently unsatisfactory experience gain by repeatedly resetting the area. Therefore, for any player whose primary goal is leveling up, Splashzone should not be used as a primary method for farming experience.
Ordonite Processor
While Ordonite Processor offers a significant improvement in experience efficiency compared to Splashzone, its main problem is its high entry cost.
Even for level 60 endgame characters, Eridium is a scarce resource for acquiring specialization points and high-level gear, making it inefficient to invest in experience farming.
From a pure experience efficiency perspective, Ordonite Processor's 1.77 million experience per hour is far lower than the top three methods discussed later. However, it must be acknowledged that this area does produce valuable Borderlands 4 Items such as Pearls and Shalashaska.
If a player's goal is to simultaneously gain experience and collect endgame gear, Ordonite Processor still has its value; but if maximizing experience is the only objective, this method should be abandoned.
Detailed Analysis of Three Efficient Experience Farming Methods
The following three methods are Drill Site, Vile Bounties, and Timekeeper. The hourly experience gained from these three methods is very similar, and the actual efficiency difference largely depends on the player's character build, gear level, and skill level.
Drill Site
Drill Site ranks third with approximately 2.01 million experience per hour. Its advantage lies in the simultaneous spawning of numerous regular monsters, elite monsters, and three boss units within the area.
Elite monsters received a fourfold experience boost after this patch, and the three bosses each provide a considerable amount of experience, resulting in a substantial total.
The efficiency of Drill Sites is highly dependent on character build. For example, Crossfire Cash is considered one of the strongest characters for farming Drill Sites in the game, capable of clearing the entire area in a brief time.
Even if a player's character isn't a top-tier Drill Site farmer, they can still achieve over 2 million experience per hour. If the player's character possesses strong area-of-effect damage and high mobility, Drill Sites are undoubtedly a highly competitive choice.
However, Drill Sites contain many exploding psychos, requiring players to constantly pay attention to positioning to avoid being instantly killed by chain explosions and disrupting their farming rhythm. Overall, Drill Sites are a high-potential, high-floor experience farming location, suitable for mid-to-late game characters with well-developed gear.
Vile Bounties
Vile Bounties ranks second with approximately 2.08 million experience per hour. However, this figure comes with an important premise: the efficiency is based on pure experience points. From a comprehensive value perspective, Vile Bounties remain the most suitable way for beginners and characters with incomplete equipment to farm experience.
The unique advantage of Vile Bounties lies in the fact that they not only provide a large amount of experience but also reward Eridium and equipment. For new characters who have just reached level 30, accumulating Eridium is one of the core needs in Endgame phase.
By farming Vile Bounties, players can accumulate a large amount of Eridium while leveling up, laying a solid foundation for specialization point learning and acquiring high-level equipment after reaching level 60.
Timekeeper
Timekeeper is at the top of the list. Since both Timekeeper's main form and its transformed form provide complete boss kill experience, the total experience gained from a complete run is equivalent to killing two regular bosses.
The regular Timekeeper run is tedious; the core of its top ranking for experience farming is using map resets to skip intermediate steps.
The specific operation process is: first kill the larger form of Timekeeper, then kill the smaller form of the main form, and then immediately jump to the edge of the map to commit suicide. After respawning and re-entering combat, players can directly face both forms without waiting for transformation animations or map traversal. This method compresses two boss kills into a brief time, significantly improving experience gain per unit of time.
Data shows that approximately three such quick kills are equivalent to the total experience gained in one Vile Bounty, while the time required to complete three kills is far less than completing one Vile Bounty. This is the fundamental reason Timekeeper method tops the efficiency charts.
The biggest limitation of Timekeeper method is whether the equipment is qualified. Players need a weapon capable of efficiently killing bosses, with Sticky Stacking currently being the easiest solution.
Whether it's a purple-quality Sticky weapon or Sticky equipment from DLC, both provide sufficient damage output during leveling.
For characters with some existing equipment, this method offers the highest experience gain. However, for new characters who have just reached level 30, lacking sufficient damage output, forcibly farming Timekeepers can actually reduce efficiency because of the excessively long kill times.
Farming Recommendations
Overall, the current Borderlands 4 experience farming ecosystem is relatively healthy - the three efficient methods are not significantly different, allowing players to choose flexibly based on their own circumstances.
For new characters who have just reached level 30, Vile Bounties is undoubtedly the best starting point. Its low barrier to entry and high overall returns help players steadily level up while accumulating gear and Eridium.
As a character's gear gradually improves, especially after acquiring a reliable Sticky weapon, players can switch to Timekeeper kills for higher pure experience efficiency. For players skilled in area-of-effect clearing builds, Drill Sites are also a highly competitive option.
However, in pursuing optimal experience, the proper acquisition and use of items is equally important.
For example, using Eridium obtained from Vile Bounties to increase specialization points, or converting Legendaries dropped by Timekeepers into economic resources, can further improve overall efficiency.
Currently, after Borderlands 4 patch, the efficiency ranking for solo experience farming is: Timekeeper kills > Vile Bounties > Drill Sites. New players should start with Vile Bounties to accumulate Borderlands 4 Items and resources, then switch to Timekeeper for maximum efficiency.
All three methods have similar efficiency and can be rotated to avoid fatigue. Proper equipment planning is closely related to experience-farming strategies; players are advised to choose flexibly based on their character and equipment to maximize experience and resource gains.
